St. Francis Builds was founded by Mike Johnson, OFM, as a ministry of St. Camillus Church, in 2005 to allow multicultural/multigenerational teams of people to experience Franciscan spirituality in mission through a 5-9 day immersion experience while doing construction work with local inhabitants In some countries, we have built homes, in others schools and learning centers. As opposed to the concept of a sister parish, the SFB model is rooted in Franciscan itinerancy.
While the mission sites may be different, the format of our program remains the same. We assemble our teams to have an intercultural, intergenerational mix. Participants’ ages have ranged from 14-90. We feel it provides more of a sense of the Church in mission. We are open to other faith traditions. Members of Unitarian, Presbyterian, Jewish, Methodist, and Muslim worshiping communities have joined us in sharing their spiritual insights. Some of these previous participants have since adapted our model to missions in their own communities.
